Brigade

A woman in dark attire holds a large sword before a castle backdrop under a night sky. Text: "Eden On Fire" and "BRIGADE" in bold.

Brigade is one of my favorite songs lyrically.

On the surface, the song leans heavily into medieval imagery — castles, stone walls, iron defenses, and the idea of fortifying yourself against attack.

But the story underneath is about something much more personal.

It’s about believing you’re protecting your heart by building emotional walls. At first those defenses feel necessary, like armor against future hurt. But over time, the same walls that were meant to keep pain out can also shut down your ability to feel anything at all.

Brigade's meaning explores that realization — that sometimes the fortress you build to protect yourself slowly turns you numb, cold, and disconnected from your own emotions.

What starts as self-protection can eventually become another kind of damage.

Brigade

Lyrics by Amy Gould – Eden On Fire

It's not an easy road to travel on alone

It's even harder when discord's your chaperone

Built up a wall of stone, a fortress on the path

Until a castle stood and held in all the wrath

Iron and stone is forged to make the heart seem strong

Nothing can penetrate, to no one will belong

Armed and protected from all who would invade

Until the heart is stone, a victim to its own brigade

It's not an easy life to hide behind the walls

The heart cries out for more rejecting all its calls

Desires locked up tight, emotional chainmail

Ever appearing brave while trembling and frail

Iron and stone is forged to make the heart seem strong

Nothing can penetrate, to no one will belong

Armed and protected from all who would invade

Until the heart is stone, a victim to its own brigade

Iron and stone is forged to make the heart seem strong

Nothing can penetrate, to no one will belong

Armed and protected from all who would invade

Until the heart is stone, a victim to its own brigade

Iron and stone is forged to make the heart seem strong

Self-deception that nothing could ever be wrong

Thick walls stand sturdy so no one can invade

And now the heart is stone, a victim to its own brigade

Brigade appears on the Eden On Fire album Unresolved.
